BHUTAN
'The Land of the Thunder Dragon'If there is heaven on the Earth?
It is this, it truly is. 'Land of the Thunder Dragon '.
Hidden away in the Himalayas Bhutan and its people have largely
lived a life is isolation from the rest of the world. The Bhutanese
have succeeded in maintaining their cultural and spiritual heritage
and belief that they live in the last Shangri-La by strictly limiting
the number of tourists to the Kingdom to a maximum of 5000 a year.
Western values have little or no impact. Here in this land of culture
and extreme charm which exudes a special feeling of serenity. The
people are intensely religious, much in evidence here, even in urban
centers the spinning of prayer wheels the murmur of mantras and
the glow of butter lamps are still important features of daily life.
Monasteries temples and religious monuments are dotted across the
landscape bearing witness it the importance of Buddhism, while red
robed monks, young and old, are everywhere mingling freely in towns
and village market.
Bhutan
boasts a wealth of Bio Diversity with almost three quarters of its
land area covered by forests, it has been declared amongst the ten
most prominent areas for environmental protection in the world.
Its rich Himalayan flora and fauna, dazzling snow capped peaks,
lush valleys and unbelievably beautiful rural will leave all but
the very hardened asking : That if there is a heaven on Earth? The
land of the Thunder dragon it probably is.

The
Trashi Yangtse Dzong was built around 1656 AD in commemoration of
a Drukpa victory and renovated in 1976. This valley was of great
strategic importance in the old days because all travel to western
and central Bhutan had to pass through here.
In
Trashi Yangtse, you can visit the popular Chorten Kora, one of few
stupas constructed in Nepali (Sherpa) style. It was built to mark
the site where Guru Rimpoche subdued many malevolent beings. According
to local tradition, the architechtural model of the stupa was brought
from Nepal, carved on a raddish.

STANDARD TREKKING PROGRAMMES
The
Bhutan Himalayas offer great opportunities for trekking. Treks can
range from a merry jaunt on a day's outing to the arduous 27-day
"Snowman Trek" that will test even the stamina and prowess
of the seasoned trekker. The land offers scenic beauty with its
splendid lofty mountains and deep valleys undisturbed by modernization.
Nature unfolds in all its glory and charm when you venture out into
the country with your sights set on that distant mountain peak.
Away from the bustle of towns and cities, the trail will take the
trekker through densely wooded slopes abounding in magnolia, pine,
juniper and rhododendron trees to verdant high meadows carpeted
with alpine flowers that come to life with a riot of colours in
the spring. The
days will be free of care as you amble over the sun-drenched hills
and dales, reveling in the sheer joy of being alive and a part of
the pristine natural environs that makes it seem as if every new
day is the first. And
there is no more heartwarming sight as the dusk descends you approach
the camp site and see in the distance the glimmer of cooking fires
where the advance party eagerly awaits your arrival with a welcoming
feast.
Trekking
in this Bhutan Himalayas can be a truly rewarding experience and
Rainbow Tours and Treks offers treks listed below to choose from.
Trekking permits are required for all parties. A trekking day usually
consists of five to six hours of walking. Pack animals, ponies and
yaks for the higher altitude treks, are provided for carrying provisions,
baggage and equipment and food preparation is provided by the Company.
All
trekking parties are accompanied by a trained guide, a cook, an
assistant and at least on horseman. The support crew walks ahead
of the trekking party each day and pitches camp before the trekkers
arrive.
Altitude
sickness may be a problem for some trekkers for high altitude treks
which usually go above 3,000 meters. Those who have not properly
acclimatized or suffer from altitude sickness are advised either
to choose lower altitude treks or to start slowly and allow yourself
to acclimatize.
